About baukultur/ca - Toronto Design Studio for Residential Architecture

Architecture Shaped by Context, Craft, and Experience

baukultur/ca is a Toronto-based residential design studio delivering fine modern architecture and integrated interior design for custom homes, major renovations and additions, multiplexes, laneway and garden suites, and boutique condominiums.

Founded in 2015, the studio creates residential projects shaped by light, proportion, material, and the way people live. From individual homes to multi-unit residential buildings, each project is developed through a direct understanding of its site, context, and the people who will inhabit it.

Our Studio

Great homes are shaped by more than thoughtful design. They require an understanding of context, materials, construction, approvals, and the many decisions that transform an idea into a place to live.

At baukultur/ca, we guide clients through every stage of the process—from early feasibility and planning through design, permits, and construction—bringing clarity, experience, and confidence to every decision along the way.

Founded in 2015, the studio brings more than 30 years of international design experience to residential projects throughout Toronto and the GTA. Our work is rooted in a belief that architecture should respond to both its surroundings and the people who inhabit it, creating homes that are considered, enduring, and deeply connected to daily life.

Our design approach is influenced by the clarity and discipline of European modernism, including Bauhaus and Swiss Modernism, combined with the warmth, restraint, and material sensitivity found in Scandinavian and Japanese architecture. Natural light, proportion, materiality, and precise detailing guide each project, allowing architecture, interiors, and construction to come together as one cohesive experience.

Whether creating a custom home, transforming an existing residence, or developing a multi-unit project, we approach each commission as a complete architectural composition—balancing vision, practicality, and the realities of building.

What “Baukultur” Means

“Baukultur” is a German term describing the relationship between architecture, craft, and the quality of the built environment. It reflects the idea that how we build shapes how we live — that the built environments we create influence our daily experiences, our communities, and our connection to the places around us.

For baukultur/ca, this principle extends beyond the individual building. It is about creating residential environments where space, material, construction, and context come together to support the lives of the people who inhabit them and contribute positively to the neighbourhoods they form.

It is both the name of our studio and the principle that guides our work.

Founder & Principal Designer of baukultur/ca Felix Leicher

Our Founder

Felix Leicher — Founder & Principal Designer

Felix brings more than three decades of experience in architectural design, construction, and project delivery to every project at baukultur/ca.

A graduate of the Technical University of Munich with a Diploma of Architecture (1998), Felix is a registered architect in Germany. His architectural education and early professional experience in Europe established a rigorous approach to design, detailing, and construction that continues to shape the studio’s work today. Since founding baukultur/ca in Toronto in 2015, the studio has completed more than 150 residential projects across Toronto and the GTA.

Central to Felix’s approach is the belief that thoughtful architecture cannot be separated from the realities of construction. Before founding baukultur/ca, Felix worked as an architectural construction and project manager on large, technically complex buildings, coordinating consultants, trades, budgets, schedules, and the delivery of complex buildings through construction. That depth of delivery experience now informs every stage of the studio’s work: design, technical coordination, and construction are developed together from the outset of every project, with a full understanding of how early decisions influence cost, constructability, and long-term building performance.

Felix believes successful architecture begins with listening. Every project starts by understanding how clients want to live before exploring the opportunities and constraints of the site, its natural light, the surrounding neighbourhood, and the existing built fabric. Each home is developed as a thoughtful response to its place, its occupants, and the way it will be lived in—creating architecture that is both deeply personal and grounded in its context.

Clients work directly with Felix throughout the entire process—from the first conversation and site visit through design, approvals, and construction coordination. This continuity keeps decisions aligned with the project’s original goals, giving clients confidence that the ideas established at the outset remain present through design, approvals, and construction.

Our Team

We are an intentionally small studio. Felix leads every project directly, supported by a skilled team of residential design and documentation professionals who contribute through each stage of the process — from initial concepts through permits and construction coordination.

This structure allows the same understanding of the project to carry through from the first conversation to the final details. Early design decisions remain connected to later technical development, allowing space, material, and construction considerations to evolve together. Continuity of judgment, not only continuity of contact, is central to how we work.

Our Approach and How We Work With You

We Start with Listening

Every project begins with a conversation. Before design starts, we take the time to understand how you live, what you value, your priorities, and your goals for the project. Those conversations establish the foundation for every project decision that follows.

Design Informed by Experience

Great architecture balances creativity with technical understanding, feasibility, and practicality. Drawing on decades of experience in architecture, construction, and project delivery, we anticipate challenges early, coordinate complex requirements, and develop solutions that remain thoughtful, practical, and buildable.

Every Project Is Guided Personally

At baukultur/ca, clients work directly with Felix throughout the project. From the first site visit through design, approvals, and construction, the same design understanding remains present, creating continuity and clear communication at every stage.

Clarity at Every Stage

Design, approvals, consultants, documentation, and construction are treated as one connected process. We explain each step, coordinate the project team, and help clients make informed decisions with confidence as the project moves forward.

Homes Designed to Last

Architecture should remain meaningful long after construction is complete. We design homes that combine beauty, functionality, durability, and building performance—creating spaces that support everyday life today while remaining adaptable for the future.
